Scottish Book Trust, the national charity changing lives through reading and writing, has announced that award winning scriptwriter and spoken word artist Cat Hepburn will embark on a tour for Scottish students as part of Book Week Scotland. A national celebration of reading and writing, Book Week Scotland runs from 18 November to 24 November.
Alongside appearances at eight high schools, Cat will also deliver events for feminist societies at Strathclyde University and YWCA Scotland, The Young Women's Movement.
Cat Hepburn is an award winning scriptwriter, spoken word artist and educator who has written a range of work for stage and screen. Cat debuted her solo spoken word show #GIRLHOOD based on her acclaimed book of the same title, at the Edinburgh Fringe 2019. Taking inspiration from this year’s Book Week theme ‘Conversation’, the interactive workshop-style event will feature reading and performance of Cat's book of poetry, #GIRLHOOD (Speculative Books) followed by a discussion and writing tasks based on the key themes. Cat's workshops will use spoken word performance to discuss the key elements of performance poetry and how spoken word can be used as a tool to make voices heard, hold a mirror up to our lives and even strive for change.
Marc Lambert, CEO of Scottish Book Trust, said: "Scottish Book Trust is always looking for fresh new ways in which we can inspire young people all over Scotland to get writing. I am sure that the students Cat visits will be inspired to get involved and start writing or performing poetry after her interactive workshops."
Initiated by the Scottish Government and supported by £200,000 from the National Lottery through Creative Scotland Targeted Funding and £26,000 from SLIC, Book Week Scotland 2019 will be delivered by Scottish Book Trust from 18 November – 24 November.
Cat Hepburn said: "I am absolutely thrilled to be involved in the Roadshow, and I'm so excited to visit all of the different groups around the country, spreading the #GIRLHOOD love. I can't wait to perform some of my book and play, to open up discussions with fun writing exercises, and to share my experiences of being a young(ish) female writer. Bring it on!"
During Book Week Scotland, Cat will also perform with Sonnet Youth at events in Edinburgh, Stirling and Glasgow. For more information visit www.facebook.com/sonnetyouth.
