The play explores the inner lives of our overlooked NHS workers, taking us on a journey to the heart of our healthcare system. We learn about their ‘normal’ working days: the monotony, pressure, grief and humour. We witness the slow erosion of their ability to cope.
As the 'emergency' spill out beds in hospital hallways become permanent Nurses dance together just to keep going and ask, “If one of us falls, who cares?”
Using verbatim accounts from over 70 nurses of all ages, backgrounds, and nationalities, collected by writer El Blackwood, Tending tells of the constant struggle to hold onto their ability to care in a system that seems certain to break them, smattered with moments of lightness.
“It's warm, compassionate and angry, much like the healthcare workers themselves, and it’s urgent and disturbing, an emergency call for a healthcare system in cardiac arrest.” - Susan Mansfield, The Scotsman
