The Old Mill Bed & Breakfast is a family-run B&B, nestled away in the heart of Biggar, Scotland. This property blends the uniqueness of its history... With the modern comforts of contemporary living.
This building has an interesting, yet somewhat unknown, origin story. The earliest known map reference of the property dates back to 1747, when it served as an old corn mill for the local community. A reference to the mill was also uniquely mentioned in a poem from 1867.
It goes as follows:
'O sons of Levi! Messengers of grace!
Have some regard to my old reverend face,
My broken shoulder and my wrinkled brow
Plead fast for pity, and supply from you.
Help, godly sirs ; and, if it be your will,
Convey me safely home to Biggar Mill,
Where, wandering to the widow, I was lost.
Alas! I fear the Carrier pays the cost.
Ties to the mill can also be skepticized as going back even further, to around 1367, When Sir Malcom Fleming granted the lands of Biggar and collected mill duties. For centuries, this building sat at the cornerstone of Biggar's agricultural heritage. However, by the 1960s, it became a derelict building... Ready to fall, into the hands of nature.
But in 2017, a new breath of life was blown into the building, reviving it through a thoughtful process of renovations. This was done while simultaneously keeping the historical features of the building maintained and preserved.
In the breakfast/public area, the old gearing mechanism that once churned the waterwheel centuries prior, still sits soundly in the centre of the room.
Each room is equipped with all the modern comforts you'd expect in a B&B. (Private en-suite, tea/coffee machine, beverages & snacks, free internet access, ironing board, hairdryer, foldable baby crib, and a Flatscreen TV with all-inclusive streaming services.)
Aside from the number of beds, and spaciousness of the rooms... Each suite holds roughly the same amenities and features. The Family Suite is perfect for families or small groups, as it can hold a maximum of 5 guests.
The Double Room is typically tailored towards couples or solo travelers, due to the fact that it can hold a maximum of 2 guests. (On a king-sized bed.)
Our B&B is nicely tucked away in The Burn Braes. This provides our guests with a nice balance between seclusion and convenience. Giving you the ability to relax in a peaceful hideaway... Or take a quick five-minute stroll up to Biggar High Street. A place where you can experience the historical charm of this small market town, while simultaneously indulging in the local attractions and cuisines!
