David Owens from the Murray 12 Walkers was the top tapper in the competition, clocking up the highest individual distance travelled. He said: “This wasn’t a one man thing, this is about a group of people who pushed themselves to the limit. We’re not talking athletes, we’re talking about your everyday, run of the mill person, just somebody who pushed that little further.
“We all can do it, and once we get through this thing that we are going through right now; we will see our friends again and meet new friends.”
Maureen Reid, Head Teacher at St Hilary’s Primary School said: “We are absolutely delighted that we have won Beat the Street for Primary School, in both the category for total number of points collected and average points. This is a clear demonstration of the commitment and collective efforts of the St. Hilary's Family.
“Beat the Street has been a wonderful initiative which has encouraged a real sense of community across East Kilbride, as well promoting the physical and mental health benefits of physical activity. As always, our school community has been outstanding in supporting this.
“Many thanks to all our pupils and parents (past and present) and to the wider friends and family of St. Hilary's who opted to play for us. You are all winners and have helped us to achieve this success. We may be a small school but this is a clear demonstration of our big ambition.”
Beat the Street organisers will also be making a £500 donation to Kilbryde Hospice as players collectively travelled more than 100,000 miles.
Unfortunately, the planned celebratory event will now not take place; winning teams will receive their prizes by post and email. However, players are invited to keep hold of their cards and fobs for now as they’ll be useful for future events and activities.
Speaking about the success of the initiative, Chair of South Lanarkshire Council’s Community and Enterprise Resources Committee, Councillor John Anderson said: “Congratulations to all the winning teams in Beat the Street and well done to every person who participated. Together you all reached a fabulous distance of more than 124,000 miles before the game sadly had to be ended early for understandable reasons.
“Once we’re all allowed to get back outside, we hope the game will encourage people to rethink how they travel around and that walking or cycling to school or work is a fun, free alternative to using the car.”
Val Caldwell, local coordinator for Beat the Street East Kilbride added: “Now, more than ever, it’s essential to keep building your immune system to ensure your body is as strong as possible to fight the virus, which you can with regular exercise where possible.
“We’ll still be on hand with a new programme called #BeatTheBug where you can sign up for newsletters containing hints, tips and advice on how you and your family can stay fit, get active, reduce stress and have fun at home. There will be regular Beat the Bug advice and Q&A sessions with our founder, Dr William Bird MBE, who is a doctor working on the NHS frontline, an expert in physical activity and an advisor to the World Health Organisation and Public Health England.”
Players are invited to give their feedback about the Beat the Street East Kilbride game at https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/PTKMZ52 where participants are in with a chance of winning prizes.
Beat the Street is delivered by Intelligent Health on behalf of South Lanarkshire Council, Smarter Choices, Smarter Places and the Scottish Government.
