As part of Scottish Golf’s ongoing commitment to grow the game and make golf as inclusive and diverse a sport as possible, the national authority is delighted to be supporting EDGA with a full suite of events management at the forthcoming G4D Open Championship at St. Andrews Links.
The competition, running from 24-26 April, will be hosted at the historic Eden Golf Course in St. Andrew’s, with the practice round taking place on the Monday prior to the First Round on the Tuesday, with the Final Round concluding the three-day event on Wednesday 26 April.
The event is fully subscribed, which is testament to the high demand that exists amongst golfers with disabilities for G4D events in Scotland. It also highlights the international appetite for inclusive, competitive opportunities in Scotland, which is recognised the world over as the home of golf.
Those who have made the field include Scottish players such as Paul Ellison (currently ranked 28 in the WR4GD Gross Rankings), Gordon Mclay and Barry McCluskey. International players will also be teeing off at the Eden, including high-ranking golfers like Aidan Grenham (the Irishman is currently placed 13 in the WR4GD Gross Rankings), with further talent coming from as far afield as Italy, Slovenia, Slovakia and the US.
The inaugural EDGA Scottish Open (and the first full event with the DP World Tour) took place at the Renaissance Club in 2019 with Irish golfer, Brendan Lawlor, claiming victory. Since then, EDGA has delivered multiple development actions in Scotland including training through the Alfred Dunhill Links Foundation (which is an official partner of Scottish Golf), the training of RSM enablers, and supporting staff at national respite charity, Leuchie House. This reflects the initial groundwork and continuing commitment by various organisations in Scotland (an EDGA member country) to cultivate and celebrate inclusive golfing opportunities for everyone, something which Scottish Golf is now carrying forwards.
Alongside the EDGA Scottish Open event, EDGA will be offering free 2-hour coaching sessions on Monday 24 April to anyone who has a disability and who is interested in trying golf for the first. Time. The coaching sessions will be hosted at the Eden Course and will be led by accredited volunteers who have been trained by professional golf coaches from EDGA, supported by leading audit, tax and consulting firm RSM. Charity staff and volunteers are invited to attend and find out more about how they can use the EDGA beginner format to encourage all abilities to start playing the sport by providing a safe environment and an introduction to the fundamentals of golf.
EDGA President Dr Tony Bennett said:
"Players competing in the EDGA Eden Open at the home of golf in St Andrews are sure to have memories that will last a lifetime. It is simply impossible to play a Links Trust golf course, breathe the east coast air and experience the unique atmosphere of St Andrews without it leaving an indelible mark. Golfers with various eligible impairments will play together over two days, and some will form lasting friendships. I, for one, look forward to seeing some of the world's best golfers with disability take on the fabulous Eden course at St Andrews".
Toni Ffinch, Senior Events Manager at Scottish, said:
"We are delighted to be supporting EDGA’s G4D event in St. Andrew’s. We see this as a fantastic opportunity to collaborate with EDGA on their flagship Scottish G4D event this season from which Scottish Golf can springboard our own events for golfers with disabilities as part of our work to generate a more diverse and inclusive game in Scotland".
Scottish Golf’s current strategic cycle runs until 2026, and includes ambitions for an Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion framework. This framework enhances the existing investment in increasing G4D participation, with the aim of introducing more G4D events to the Scottish Golf portfolio as the authority strives to ensure that golf really is Scotland’s game for everyone.
