Beat the Street East Kilbride is a free, interactive active travel game that encourages people to walk, cycle and wheel for prizes. The game started yesterday (18th September) with an official launch at Universal Connections, and will continue for six weeks.

Local residents will recognise the beeping and flashing sensors called ‘Beat Boxes’ which have been placed on lampposts around the borough help participants explore the local area and all it has to offer and to encourage people to consider walking, cycling, running or wheeling those shorter journeys. To play, players need a card which can be collected from one of the distribution centres listed at www.beatthestreet.me/eastkilbride or alternatively, players over the age of 13 can download the free Beat the Street app to play the game on their phone.

The first week of the game is themed ‘Go Play’ for players to get to grips with the rules and subsequent weeks have a different focus, from Go Explore to Go Wild and Go Travel.

Players can join a school, community, or a workplace team and there is the opportunity to help Kilbryde Hospice to win £500.

Beat the Street East Kilbride is being delivered by Intelligent Health on behalf of South Lanarkshire Council. The project is supported by South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture and is funded by Strathclyde Partnership for Transport.

The Chair of South Lanarkshire Council’s Community and Enterprise Resources Committee, Councillor Robert Brown, said: “Beat the Street East Kilbride is off to a great start! Thanks to everyone who has signed up so far and please keep encouraging your friends, family and neighbours to get involved and join your team! We often use the car without a second thought, but it’s often true that it is just as quick to walk or cycle to school and you can avoid the hassle of traffic and parking. Many previous Beat the Street participants have said that the game helped them discover shortcuts to school and that it helps families enjoy the walk or cycle to school together.

“We’re delighted that the Beat the Street competition will give everyone of ages and abilities the opportunity to explore the area, to spend time together as a family and to enjoy walking, cycling and rolling outdoors in all the wonderful green spaces across our borough.”
